520 _aAnatolia in Daylight is a collection of archaeological essays written for Professor Cevdet Bayburtluoğlu of Ankara University who has devoted a great part of his life to the archaeology of Anatolia. Bayburtluoğlu was introduced to archaeology back in the 1950s when the field of archaeology was newly developing in Turkey. At that time, as Ekrem Akurgal's student, he joined the excavations in Phokaia (Foça). After Bayburtluoğlu started his academic career at Ankara University, he worked at the ancient sites of Daskyleion (Ergili), Myrina, Pitane (Çandarlı), Smyrna (Bayraklı) and Erythrai (Ildırı). Later on, he directed the excavations at the Lycian site of Phaselis. Currently, Bayburtluoğlu continues in his intensive efforts to bring his beloved Lycian site of Arykanda (Arif) into the daylight.Parallel to the broadness of Bayburtluoğlu's area of interest, to the geographical variety of his archaeological work, and to his colorful personality, the variety of the subject matters of the essays in this book reflects the rich archaeological heritage of Anatolia, ranging from Protohistory to the Byzantine period. All of the essays in this book, none of them published before, have been written by Bayburtluoğlu's colleagues and students who have had the opportunity to get to know him closely, and presented to him as a collective expression of the pleasure they derive from having known him.
