This revision contains the same breadth and depth as previous editions with the content of pertinent chapters divided into two parts: (1) Part A on Elementary Topics and (2) Part B on Advanced Topics. This innovative design facilitates the book's use in elementary and advanced courses. Completely new chapters on the Global Positioning System (GPS) and Mapping, Digital Mapping, Spatial Information Systems, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have been added. Also new are Appendices on Elementary Mathematical Concepts, Coordinate Transformations, and Introduction to Probability and Statistics. Significant revuisions have been introduced in the materials on surveying adjustments, coordinate frames and map projections, and photogrammetry. Development of least squares adjustments has been consolidated, but applications are distributed in the appropriate chapters. Coverage of the total station system and data collector is enlarged and included in all of the areas of application. Thus, this textbook is revised throughout to reflect the most recent developments in technology and methods, will be good for first level and second level courses in surveying without losing its value as a reference textbook.
