Dissertation note: Originally presented as the author's thesis (doctoral--Leiden, 1999) Summary: The paintings with Old Testament scenes found in the altar room(s) and the transverses space in front, the hurus, of Coptic churches dating from the end of the eleventh century up to c. 1300. These paintings are part of a decorative programme which consists of themes like Christ enthroned, the Virgin enthroned with Child, angels and other heavenly beings, the twenty-four Elders, prophets, scenes from the New Testament, apostles and saints. At present, there are five churches or chapels left with scenes of Old Testament stories in their hurus and/or altar room(s).
