The rock sanctuary of Yazılıkaya is one of the most important places of worship of the Late Bronze Age in Turkey. Unique reliefs of over ninety male and female deities, animals and mythical creatures adorn its walls - more than half of all known Hittite reliefs are gathered here. This sanctuary was once just outside of Hattusa, the capital of the Hittites in central Anatolia. This leads the German Archaeological Institute since 1931 excavations, and in this context, the rock sanctuary of Yazılıkaya been thoroughly investigated. The scientific literature is extensive, but it was lacking a well-illustrated description of the sanctuary and its various aspects, which addresses both professionals as well as for a broader audience. This book is intended to fill this gap: it provides the reader with a tour of the sanctuary and can also serve as a guide on site. At the same time, it summarizes the results of earlier excavations and the results of new research together. Very detailed and illustrated with spectacular admissions of the rock massif rock chambers with all the reliefs and the associated temple building are presented in detail. A reconstruction of the history of the shrine and its still mysterious function follow. Additional chapters on Hittites and their capital, etc. to the discovery and research history of the place provide additional information that this place is alive in the eyes of the reader.
