Summary, etc. |
The Ahhijawa texts are a group of 26 Hittite texts from the late-15th--early-14th century B.C.E. that were first brought to academic attention by the Swiss scholar Emil Forrer in 1924, as he sought to identify the "Ahhijawa" mentioned in the texts as the Mycenaeans of the Bronze Age Greek mainland and to connect various individuals and place names to Greek legends of the Trojan War. The subject of continuing academic controversy and debate, these texts are presented here by Beckman (Hittite and Mesopotamian studies, U. of Michigan, US), Bryce (emeritus, U. of Queensland School of History, Philosophy, Religion, and Classics, Australia), and Cline (classical and Near Eastern languages and civilizations, George Washington U.) in transliterated and translated form, together with commentary on the texts' larger historical and interpretive context. |
